PNOY PerSONAfied: Dissecting "Tuwid na Daan"

In his fourth State of the Nation Address, we expect the President to continue his narrative of tuwid na daan in reporting his mid-term accomplishments. In his first SONA in 2010, Pnoy contrasted his anti-corrupt administration with his predecessor’s baluktot na daan. He reiterated to his ‘boss’, his kababayan, that ‘wang-wang’ or abusive practices in the bureaucracy will be eradicated in his second SONA. In 2012 PNoy nostalgically related his Martial Law experience with “forgiving but not forgetting” the sins of the past administrations, and the economic rise of the former “sick man of Asia.”

This SONA critique and mid-term assessment would like to dissect the metaphor of the “tuwid na daan” by focusing on the following key topics and some burning issues that has surrounded PNoy’s presidency:

Economics (IBON Foundation): economic growth and development (i.e. poverty and Charter Change)
Geopolitics (Prof. Sarah Raymundo, Center for International Studies): national sovereignty and territorial dispute (i.e. Sabah standoff and the disputed West Philippine Sea)
Sociology (Dr. Gerry Lanuza, Department of Sociology): social inequality and corruption (i.e. Hacienda Luisita and CJ Corona’s impeachment)

With special intermission number from BLKD.

The event is an accredited ACLE requirement by the University Student Council.

Monico Atienza Alternative Studies Festival

The educational festival intends to respond to the challenge of being the Second Propaganda Movement tracing back to the propaganda movement led by Gat Jose Rizal. It seeks to continue the great tradition of iskolars ng bayan during the 1960s when the Student Cultural Association in UP (SCAUP) launched study circles to learn the teachings of the great philosophers such as Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, and Mao Zedong. A movement that led to formation of the most-comprehensive youth organization, Kabataang Makabayan (Patriotic Youth) which aims to continue a new type of revolution tracing back from the Andres Bonifacio’s Katipunan.

The activity also aims to commemorate Prof. Monico Atienza, former President of SCAUP and Secretary-General of Kabataang Makabayan during the First Quarter Storm, and his contribution to the youth and revolutionary movement. The organizers hope that the youth will be inspired by the life of Prof. Atienza as a youth leader, an activist, a writer, a professor, and a revolutionary.
